Poem/Homework for week of February 22nd

We learned about different kinds of scientists at our Scientist in the School presentation and that got us talking about what we might want to be when we grow up. Actually, that is the subject of our next class book too! Watch out for it in the next few weeks. As such, we are working on this poem for the week and to imagine all the different things we could be in the future!

Scientist in the School

Here are some of the fun activities we got to enjoy during our Scientist in the School presentation! With the help of some parent volunteers, students were able to take part in learning centres that taught them how to be palaeontologists, meteorologists, chemists, astronomers and marine biologists.

Language Activities

Here are some examples of simple language activities you can make and play at home. In the first picture you must match lowercase letters on clothes pegs to the corresponding capital letter on the construction paper. This is both great letter recognition practice and great for fine motor skills.

The second picture is a good activity for kids who already know their letter sounds and want to start reading and writing. They must look at the picture, say the word and find the missing first letter by the sound they hear.

Happy Lunar New Year!

We have a few students in our class who are celebrating Lunar New Year so we read a story about it, learned about the year of the monkey and made some dragon masks. They look fantastic!

Class Plant

After 14 weeks our plant has been moved into a pot! The roots had grown so long that they started curling around the vase so we decided to transplant it into some soil. Every child in the class today helped to scoop some soil into the pot! Unfortunately, I bought a pot that was not tall enough and our plant needed some support to keep it upright. We hope it survives!

Home Reading

Some of you have signed up for the home reading program and this is the package you would have received last Friday in the green Friday folders. The package consists of a bag with your child's name on it, the book they should be reading over the weekend, a home reading book log where you or your child will write the name of the book and an introductory letter just giving a brief explanation of the program and some tips on how to help your child read the books.

It is very important that you keep the book in this bag and then return this package complete with book and reading log to school every Monday.  Books must kept in these same bags as they have your child's name and corresponding book bag number on it.  Once we have gotten the old book back we can choose a new book for the following week.  Happy reading!
