Winter Break Challenge

Hello Families! Just as an FYI we will not be sending home the yellow homework folders or home reading books over the break. However, if you would like some fun activities to do over the break please try our Winter Break Challenges! You will find these challenge sheets in your child's green folder this Friday.

Wonder Wall

This is our "Wonder Wall"!

Kids are naturally inquisitive, but most don't know how to formulate questions yet, so we start with the basics and teach the children how to ask a question.

We started by playing "Mystery Bag" where I hide something in a bag and the children must ask questions in order to figure out what is in the bag. Once they get the hang of that we allow the students to take turns putting things in the bag while the rest of the class guesses. You should try this at home!

After this, we move on to showing the class interesting pictures for them to start wondering about. We like to start off with pop-culture pictures so they have a frame of reference of where to start. We first talk about things that we already know and what we can see. From there we start to formulate questions about what we wonder and what we would like to find out.  We do this as a large group lesson many times before getting to the point where students can formulate questions on their own.

It's a long process, but we can already see a huge improvement in the way students ask questions!

Learning Board

In our class we have a Learning Board.  Together, we list our Learning Goals, which we call "What we are learning" and what we need to do to be successful. This is sometimes called a Success Criteria in the older grades, but we call it our checklist with the heading "How do you know?"

As you can see, we have been learning about sorting in Math and questioning in Language.

Please talk to your kids about all the things we've been learning at school!

Painting

The class has suddenly become interested in how to make landscape paintings! We have watched a few videos online of how to paint nature scenes. In this picture you can see one of our students watching a video on the iPad while he attempts to make his own nature painting. What an amazing end result with that strong tree!

Poem/Homework - Week of November 21st

We have been learning how to properly form and ask questions. We play a game called "Mystery Bag" where one person hides something in the mystery bag while others must ask questions to figure out what the bag holds. This is a great game you can easily play at home too. It encourages questioning, listening, answering, giving details, etc. You can even switch the game to giving clues of what is in the bag to help develop descriptive language! Give it a try!

Poem/Homework for week of October 3rd

We have been talking about Thanksgiving and being thankful for the important people in our lives. This weeks poem/song is all about being thankful! As it is a long weekend, it is policy to not send homework, however, we were hoping that you could help us out with a little something. So many of the boys and girls have been talking about their families, but we want to know exactly who is in your family! So this week's "homework" is to be completed by you the parent, caregivers and families. Make sure to check it out!

Poem/Homework for week of September 26th

We are learning about the letter Aa this week! This week's poem is all about the letter Aa, however, it contains names of students in our class, so I will not post it online. Many students learn to recognize letters and letter sounds by making connections to something they already know or is relevant to them, which is why we included some of our friends' names! Here you can see the homework part.

Library Books

Hopefully starting Monday, September 19th, your child will start bringing home library books! They will come home in these special library book bags. You must return the books in this bag every week. This is how we track who has returned their books and may take a new one. Library day is every Day 5 for our class and it will be marked on our calendar every month. Please make sure to return library books, in their bags, before the next library day.

Poem/Homework - Week of September 12th - We Pay Attention!

Starting this week your child will be bringing home their yellow poetry books. Please read through the poem/song with your child and then work WITH THEM (don't do it for them!) to complete the homework. Often, the homework will say to "write a sentence" and at this age a sentence can look like any number of things! Some students may be able to only write their names, others may only write a few random letters, most JKs may only be able to make a few lines and squiggles, while some SKs may be ready to try writing sentences!  Whatever stage your child is at, please let them try the work on their own. After they have attempted a picture and sentence on their own, have your child tell you what their picture is all about and then you can write their ideas down for them, if you'd like. Our first poem/homework for the week of September 12th is called We Pay Attention!

Where Does Garbage Go?

Where does garbage go? We have three different bins in which to throw our garbage, but it can get quite confusing for the little ones! You can help us out by reinforcing this at home.

Popcorn Fundraiser

Our school is having a popcorn sale! If you would like to take part in this fundraiser you simply ask your friends and family if they would like to buy a bag, take down their flavour order (order forms were sent home last week) and then send the completed order sheet and collected money back to school. You will receive your bags of popcorn soon after.
