Just a place for parents, students and educators to see what we've been up to in our Kindergarten class this year!

Roots
For our latest Science unit of living things and planting, Mrs. Menzies thought it might be neat to show the kids how roots grow. So, over the next few weeks we are going to observe how roots grow on this plant!

My Pet Snake
Earlier today our class put on a wonderful performance in front of some of the other Primary children. All classes from Kindergarten and Grade One performed songs for one another.
The theme was "Pet Show" and each class sang a song about a different kind of pet. Our song was called "My Pet Snake" and for our costume, students got to wear these handmade snake puppets!
I knit the needed material, while Mrs. Menzies stitched them up and added the eyes and tongue! Each student got to take a puppet home as a thank you for a wonderful performance.

Happy Mother's Day!
For our latest Science unit we've been discussing the life cycles of plants and animals and decided to do a little planting of our own!
Mrs. Menzies worked with each student to go through the planting process. After the initial planting was done, we did a little procedural writing about the steps you'd need to follow when planting. Then, we watched as our plants grew over the next few weeks and recorded our observations in our science booklets and through a lot of oral discussions.
The plants were transplanted into individual pots and sent home as a lovely gift for Mother's Day! (I forgot to take a picture of the pots after Mrs. Menzies' wonderful wrapping job!)
Hopefully soon, you'll have some beautiful marigold flowers blooming!

May Calendar and Newsletter
Here is a quick overview of our activities for the month of May.
Fundraisers
Our school is taking part in 2 different fundraisers this month. The first is our annual Jump Rope for Heart day, which will take place on Thursday, May 2nd, where the entire school gets together for a fun afternoon of jumping rope in the school yard! Fundraising envelopes were already sent home last week. All money raised for this event will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation towards important research. Students are asked to return their fundraising envelopes before that date.
The second fundraiser taking place this month is one of our favourites! We will be having a dance-a-thon on Friday, May 10th and one of our very own Kindergarten parents has offered to be our D.J. for the event! A big thank you to him for volunteering to help our school. All money raised through the dance-a-thon will go directly to our school!
Mathematics
During the month of May we will begin to look at the concept of time. Later in the month we will shift our focus to 3 dimensional shapes. The children will learn the names of several 3D shapes (i.e., cone, cylinder, cube) and search for these shapes in their daily lives.
Science
We will continue to discuss seasonal changes that occur in spring (planting, caring for the garden, baby animals). We will also talk about living and non-living things that are around us.
Librarian Visit
On May 10th a librarian from the Public Library’s Children’s department will visit our class. She will talk to the children about the services and activities available to families at the various library locations.
Dressing for Outdoors
Spring is finally here…sort of! Although some days are sunny and warm, we also continue to have gloomy, rainy and sometimes even snowy days! Please help your child to be dressed appropriately for playing outside, as some sunny days can still be quite cold and jackets may still be necessary. Sunhats and sunglasses are also great to have, as well as sunscreen on warm sunny days.
Are you Moving?
If you are moving and your child will not be at our school next year, please inform the office as soon as possible.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the Kindergarten program!
